FENG SHUI AND SOUND
by Danick Isabelle Jawer
This article relates to an experiment rather than a technique. It is a suggestion to those who are intrigued by the power of the voice as a tool to transform ourselves as well as our environment. I have used my voice many times during a Feng Shui consultation when I felt that the space could use a little "vocal massage", a gentle clearing to release unseen energies. Stand in the middle of the room, listen in silence first and then let your voice freely express what you are feeling. This act of simple "beingness" is a gift to yourself and an invitation to supportive energies to manifest in your life. Trust it, we know how to heal ourselves, we just forgot...
What is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui (pronounced Fung schway) is the Chinese teaching of living in harmony with our environment.
Also called the art of placement, Feng Shui is really the art of observing and understanding what makes everything pulsate with life. The Chinese call it Chi, the Japanese name it Ki, it is Prana for the Hindus and for us Spirit, Life Force or Energy. It is everywhere in the mountains, rivers and trees, in the roads, buildings, windows and doors, in the furniture, colors and objects that we surround ourselves with. Their physical placement creates a flow of energy that directly affects the quality of our lives.
For 4000 years or more, Feng Shui has been helping people find, arrange or create homes and workplaces that will ensure them a prosperous life as well as nourishment for their body, mind and soul.
Feng Shui which means wind and water is based on the Chinese philosophy of the Yin and Yang, the two opposite forces (receptive and active) that complement each other in the dance of life.
Why Feng Shui and sound?
Combining the ancient knowledge of Feng Shui with intuitive vocal sound allows us to work directly on the vibrational state of a space.
Like the blood in our veins or the air in our lungs, buildings contain life force and need clear passages for energy to gently move through (moving Chi is healthy Chi). Proper lighting, comfortable ventilation and temperature can totally change the energy of a room that has been closed and dark for a while. Pleasant fragrance, music and colors (all vibrational stimuli) can also dramatically change the way we feel there.
The human voice through singing, toning or chanting has always been an instinctive, although mysterious tool to heal ourselves and our surroundings. The large variety of sounds that can be produced by the voice can be used with specific intentions and create change. For example, short and loud sounds break down and disperse "thick" collections of stagnant energy (under stairways, outdoor decks, storage rooms, garages etc.); long and full vowel tones bring fluidity and restore a healthy flow while reinforcing our mental decisions.
Singing is affirming that you are willing to breathe in change and exhale the past. Singing is remembering that sound exists only in the present time and for the one who is listening.
